Track UPI spending without connecting your bank
Most everyday spending in India now goes through UPI — small, frequent payments that are easy to lose track of. Vyaya lets you record them without linking a bank account or sharing a login.
- Add a UPI payment in a few taps: amount, category and the account it came from.
- Use Quick Add for payments you make again and again, like lunch or your commute.
- Turn on optional Auto-Capture to detect supported bank and UPI app notifications on Android.
- Review each detected transaction before it is added — nothing enters your records without you.
- No access to your SMS inbox is needed for any of this.
New to this? Here is a step-by-step guide on how to track UPI spending.

Cash spending should not disappear from your budget
Bank-linked and SMS-based trackers can't see what you spend in cash. In Vyaya, cash is simply another account, so it lands in the same budgets as everything else.
- Create a Cash account alongside your bank accounts.
- Record an ATM withdrawal as a transfer from Bank to Cash — it isn't spending yet.
- Log the expense when the cash is actually spent: chai, an auto ride, the vegetable vendor.
- Each rupee is counted once, so your monthly total stays honest.

Track multiple credit cards without double-counting
A card purchase and a card bill are two different events. Treat both as expenses and the same spending is counted twice.
- Add each credit card as its own account.
- Record a purchase on the card as an expense, in the category it belongs to.
- Record paying the card bill as a transfer from your bank to the card — not a second expense.
- See card spending alongside your cash, UPI and bank spending.
More detail in our guide to tracking credit card spending in India.

Scan receipts instead of typing every detail
For bigger purchases with a printed bill — a supermarket run, a new appliance, a family dinner — point your camera at the receipt and let Vyaya fill in the details.
- Vyaya reads the amount, merchant and date from the photo.
- Check the details and fix anything before you save — faded or crumpled bills can be harder to read.
- Save scanning for the purchases worth a record; quick entry is still fastest for small spends.

Set budgets and keep recurring expenses visible
A budget only helps if you can see it move as you spend — and if the payments that repeat every month are already in the picture.
- Set monthly budgets for the categories that matter to you, like groceries, food delivery or travel.
- See how much is left in each category as the month goes on.
- Add recurring payments such as rent, subscriptions or EMIs so repeated costs stay in view.
- See your upcoming recurring payments and total monthly commitment in one place.

Track money lent and borrowed separately
Lending ₹5,000 to a friend isn't spending — you expect it back. Logged as an expense, it makes your month look worse than it was, and the repayment muddles it again.
- Record money you lend or borrow as a debt, not an expense.
- See what each person owes you, and what you owe.
- Record partial repayments and watch the balance come down.
- Your normal spending categories stay clean.

Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about tracking expenses in India with Vyaya.
Which is the best expense tracker app in India?
The best choice depends on how you want to track spending. If you want to manage UPI, cash, bank accounts and cards without connecting your bank or granting SMS inbox access, Vyaya is one option designed around that workflow.
Is there a free expense tracker app in India?
Yes. Vyaya is free on Google Play, with no ads and no subscription. There are no paywalled features and nothing to upgrade to.
Can I track UPI expenses with Vyaya?
Yes. You can add UPI payments in a few taps, use Quick Add for payments you repeat, or turn on optional Auto-Capture, which detects supported bank and UPI app notifications on Android and lets you review each transaction before it is added. Vyaya does not connect to your bank or UPI app directly.
Can I track cash and UPI in the same app?
Yes. Create a Cash account next to your bank accounts. An ATM withdrawal is recorded as a transfer from Bank to Cash, and each cash purchase is logged as an expense, so cash and UPI spending sit in the same budgets without being counted twice.
Does Vyaya need access to my bank account?
No. Vyaya does not ask for your bank login, net-banking password or account aggregation. You add your accounts yourself and record transactions in the app.
Does Vyaya read my SMS?
No. Vyaya does not require access to your SMS inbox. Auto-Capture is optional and works from supported Android transaction notifications, not SMS messages — and you can skip it entirely and add transactions yourself.
Can I track credit-card spending?
Yes. Add each card as an account. A purchase on the card is an expense; paying the card bill is a transfer from your bank account to the card, so the same spending is not counted twice.
Is Vyaya available on Android?
Yes. Vyaya is available on Android through Google Play. There is no iPhone or web version yet.
Does Vyaya have ads?
No. Vyaya does not show ads.
Does Vyaya require a subscription?
No. Vyaya is free to use, with no subscription and nothing to upgrade to.
